After the disorienting theft of a bag with everything of any value in it – including my passport, credit cards, money, etc, the cruise I was meant to get on denied me boarding. In a gesture that reaffirmed my faith in all things Italian, an extremely kind man running the Civitavecchia port operations arranged a stay at this B&B for me and two fellow pax who experienced the same fate, knowing that we were penniless.
Being the ‘lodging snob’ that I am, was super skeptical at what I would find, but with few options I accepted. Since this is not a review of my misfortune, I will get to the point. We arrived at the building, exhausted and in a bit dazed from the days events to a warm greeting by the owner and told to make ourselves at home. The apartment is up a short flight of stairs after which you will find a spacious, spotless two bedroom flat, with a large bathroom, kitchen with fridge and pantry stocked with water, juice, fruit and other snacks. The bedrooms are large and bed comfortable. There was wifi, which I only used for my phone since my computer was now in the hands of the thiefs that stole my bag. But I digress. This lovely place has everything you need for a comfortable stay – even if you have nothing! I didn’t get much of a chance to explore the neighborhood, but in the short trips to/from the property there appeared to be a handful of restaurants and small shops in the vicinity and upon closer inspection of a map, close to the train station, centrum and port.
We had a very early morning start to get to our respective embassies, but even so were provided fresh croissants and coffee before our departure. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer experience, despite the circumstances.
If you want the usual overpriced, cold standard hotel stay, then by all means book a room at a local chain hotel. But if you want a warm, welcoming local Italian experience, stay here. You won’t be disappointed. Thanks Adriano (and dad), Stefano, Antonio for being so kind. We will be back 🙂
